TUESDAY:  Food

With a full house right now, we have all kinds of food desires.  Paleo, gluten-free, low carb and hungry boys.  I find myself cooking a little of everything to try to please at least someone!  My favorite soup lately has been a simple chicken and vegetable soup.

Chicken Vegetable Soup

1 T. butter
1 stick celery, sliced thin
1 carrot, peeled and sliced thin
2 T. dehydrated onions

Melt the butter over medium heat in a sauce pan and saute the celery, carrots and onions until the onions are transparent.

3 cups chicken broth
1 cup cooked chicken cubes

Add the broth and bring to a boil

1 cup of vegetables of your choice (shredded cabbage, sliced pea pods, frozen mixed vegetable mix)
1 t. pepper

Stir into broth and remove from heat.  Cover and remove from burner for 5 minutes.
Ladle into cups.

FRIDAY:  HOW-TO DAY

I thought I'd start this catagory with something simple:

Keeping Your Car Interior Clean
#1  When you get out of the car, take all your trash with you.  I have a garbage can about a foot from my parking place in the garage, so when we get out it's easy to throw away all our empty water bottles, candy wrappers, kleenex's, etc.  It's amazing how this simple step keeps your car clean looking!
#2  I keep a basket in the back of the car/ trunk of the car with 2 small pillows, a blanket, ice scraper, scissors, an extra water bottle, small first aid kit, baby wipes, sun screen and bug spray.  These are things I routinely forgot when we went to soccer games or for walks in the park, so keeping these things on hand saves money, and having a place to put them maintains order.
#3  Re-useable grocery bags are in the car, all in one large bag.  They do me no good if I store them in the kitchen!  Store these in the car.
#4  Use those baby wipes from the basket to wipe down the seats and the dash from time to time.

Any other ideas to keep that interior clean?  Please share.

WEDNESDAY: Books

Art for Kids: 52 Creative Adventures in Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Paper, and Mixed Media, by Susan Schwake.

Confession to make- I love doing the art projects myself and not with kids.  Although, I owe much of my thinking out of the box to kids messes and misuse of art supplies.  This book is a simple guide to using the collection of art supplies that has accumulated in my cupboard over the years.  We always intended to use the oil pencils, charcoal pencils, papers, etc, but ran out of time for one reason or another.  Maybe I can use this collection of "goods" with my grandsons, but first I want to learn how to use them myself!

Today's project:  Leaf Prints with Watercolor
My garden is full of leaves this time of year.  Instead of block-printing ink I will use thinned black craft paint.

WEDNESDAY:  BOOKS

A few years ago I read that if you read 12 books on one subject, you are considered an expert.  With all the other media options we have to learn from, reading seems to be largely ignored.  I hope to bring you a list of what I'm reading with my Wednesday posts each week.

The followoing quote is from Marmee and Louisa, by Eve LaPlante:

Her brother sent her bundles of books and suggested she read one article from the Rambler Journal each morning "until you can remember the train of thought and the leading ideas."  Lest her zeal cause her excessive exertion, he advised caution.  "Do not be alarmed by the number of Books which it is desirable you should read; nor be induced to read with too great rapidity....Haste in reading is a great waste of mind as well as time: of mind because it weakens the power of observation; of time because nothing is in fact accomplished."  Finally, "Do not think that all knowledge is to be obtained from books, and that you are...only learning when sitting in your little chamber.  Let your mind be constantly employed upon something...Indulge your curiosity."

Some other books I am reading this week are:
Hinds Feet on High Places, by Hannah Hurrand
Folks, This Aint Normal, by Joel Salatin
The variety of ideas gives me many things to think about when doing the other things in my day.

TUESDAY THEME:  FOOD

 Mint Tea

1 1/2 cups dried peppermint leaves
1 1/2 cups dried basil
1/2 cup fennel
1/2 cup licorice root

Stir this together and store in a jar.  To brew a pot of tea:  place 2 tablespoons of tea into a fine mesh basket and pour hot water over it and let it steep for about five minutes.  Remove tea basket and enjoy.  This is also a refreshing cold drink when poured over ice.
